چکیده

The movement of small animals in well-defined environments is increasingly used in ecotoxicology as a sensitive indicator of water contamination with toxicants. This work describes a framework for the analysis of Artermia franciscana within miniaturised chambers. This work combines: (a) a proof-ofconcept miniaturised Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) platform where any changes in swimming patterns exhibited by Artemia franciscana can be related to the toxicity of the environment with (b) a pipeline of image processing steps for the movement analysis of video sequences of test specimens. The analysis pipeline is semiautomatic as it allows a user to define a region of interest and confirm intensity levels that are used for two-level hysteresis segmentation. Tracking is automatic, and a large number of statistical measurements and visualisation tools are provided. In addition, proofreading tools for validation of tracks are provided to link, break or delete tracks. The software consists of Matlab® m-files and is available in the website http://www.objecttrack.org.uk/.

Use of agriculture by-products (brans and meal) as food for Artemia franciscana (Kellogg, 1906) and effects on performance and biochemical compositions

Aquaculture needs to provide live food such as Artemia and one of the most important issues in A. franciscana rearing, is a food supply. The instar I nauplii were fed in seven treatments including Wheat bran, Rice bran, Soy-meal and algae (Dunaliella salina). For each treatment calculated growth rate, survival percentage, and body composition. At the reproductive period, 35 pairs were individua...

Acute toxicity of TiO2, CuO and ZnO nanoparticles in brine shrimp, Artemia franciscana

The brine shrimp, Artemia spp., is widely used in ecotoxicological research as a biological index. In the present study, aquatic stability and acute toxic effects of TiO2, CuO and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) on Artemia franciscana were investigated. Acute exposure was conducted in sea water with different concentrations of selected nanoparticles at 24h, 48h, 72h and 96h. The mortality rate of A. fr...

Growth, survival and stress resistance of Tiger Barb (Puntius tetrazona) larvae fed on linseed oil-enriched Artemia franciscana nauplii

Effect of feeding on linseed oil (LO)-enriched Artemia was investigated on growth, survival and stress resistance of tiger barb (Puntius tetrazona) larvae. Larvae were fed by LO-enriched (2.5, 5 and 7.5 %) as well as non-enriched Artemia nauplii for 14 d, followed by 14 d feeding on non-enriched Artemia. Fish fed on enriched nauplii showed significant increase in growth performance at both 14th...

Evaluating the Bioaccumulation of Nickel and Vanadium and their effects on the Growth of Artemia urmiana and A. franciscana

Although there is growing evidence that metals can be toxic to various aquatic species, there is still insufficient knowledge to integrate this information in environmental risk assessment procedures. In this study, we have investigated bioaccumulation and effects of nickel and vanadium on mortality and growth of Artemia urmiana and Artemia franciscana. The in 24 h of A. urmiana and A. franci...
